Picking the Right Kitchen Tables and Chairs Can Enhance the Look of Your Kitchen

When we are planning our kitchens, we pay most of our attention to the appliances and the decor, and rightly so. But we should not take kitchen tables and chairs for granted. While kitchen tables and chairs might seem like purely functional pieces, choosing the right style will greatly add to the kitchen’s overall look. The tables and chairs you pick might even end up dictating the decor of the rest of the kitchen. Round kitchen table and chairs can have carvings or colors that dictate what we do with the rest of the room in terms of decorations or color schemes.

The size of the kitchen should be the main consideration in selecting chairs and tables for the room. If your kitchen is small, for example, don’t pick chairs and tables that are too large; narrow, high-backed chairs will help you maximize kitchen space. To further save space in a cramped kitchen, pick chairs that can be pushed into the table. When measuring for any kind of folding dining table and chairs you need to also take into account that you will need room to pull the chairs out while sitting and getting up from the table.

Then, decide what style you want the pieces to be. Look at your kitchen’s decor and think about what tables and chairs would work best with it. Or, you can pick a set that stands out against the décor, to create a strong focal point to which your guests’ eyes will be drawn.

Style considerations also dictate what kind of material you want your chairs and tables to be. Although most furniture for the kitchen is made of wood, tables and chairs can also be made from metal or plastic, and even a mixture of materials, such as a metal table with a glass top. You might even be interested in something unusual like ghost acrylic chairs. As a general rule, tables and chairs should be made of the same material; however, if you have a good eye for style, you can mix and match pieces of different materials.

But always keep practicality in mind when selecting pieces for the kitchen. While the chairs you are considering may look stylish, are they comfortable? If you want your kitchen to be a welcoming place where your family hangs out, comfort should be a major priority since you will likely want to spend a lot of time sitting on the chairs. Durability is another important consideration. While it is tempting to scrimp by buying cheaper tables and chairs, you will save more in the long run if you invest on quality furniture. Keep in mind that the tables and chairs will undergo a lot of wear and tear, particularly if you have young children in the family. And if you have elderly family members, you should pick chairs that are sturdy so they can steady themselves when getting up or sitting down.

Kitchen tables and chairs that you already own can be dressed up so that they will work better with the rest of the kitchen. For example, you can refurbish the tables and chairs by painting or reupholstering them. Painting the furniture the right color can really enhance the look of your kitchen, either by coordinating with the other accessories and furniture or by providing a contrast. But even a coat of varnish can give the pieces shiny finishes that will make them look like new. Finally, you can dress up tables by adding table cloths or skirts. While fabric table cloths may be impractical for daily use, they can make your table look festive for special occasions; accessories such as candlesticks, vases and placemats can enhance the look of the tablecloth further. On regular days, however, you may want to consider a more practical alternative, such as vinyl table cloths that are stain-resistant and easy to clean and maintain.
